The Truths of Studios Onstage in ‘Red’

NYTimes.com: "Painful experience has taught me to approach movies or plays about artists and their art with low expectations. For someone like me — an art critic for longer than she cares to recall who before that held various small-time jobs around the art world — these dramatic forays into the studio tend to fall gratingly wide of the mark."

This sounds like an absolutely fascinating show to go see, even though the writer seems to have been unnerved by some of the decisions made. I absolutely love seeing what sort of state artists keep their workspaces in: I actually saw an exhibit about architects and their studios over spring break, and was truly fascinated by the scope of the work they put out and how it had nothing to do with the disarray or neatness of their environment. What the space looked like was in direct correlation with their process as an artists, and I think that that's what bothers the writer so much when she saw the actors pry into such a pivotal moments for Rothko.

I would be interested in reading the script of this to learn more about the artists, and seeing the set to get a reflection of how the designers saw to portray him. But I honestly don't know if I'd like them together. Letting the silence speak for itself, like the writer hints at, would be just as rewarding.
