If you want to know more about Susan Hilferty's design process, ask Susan Tsu. Last year, I had the fortune of taking a backstage tour of the Wicked costumes with Susan Tsu and learned quite a great deal about Susan's design process. Several of the costume pieces for example were inspired by the color palette of famous paintings by Van Gogh. If you are an avid museum goer, you might be able to guess which one. Always a surprise, Susan is one to watch for her unique design process and always innovative costumes ie. pregnant belly suit in Wicked.
It's really interesting to see other designers' thought processes especially the designer of Wicked, because it really shows how much meticulous and attentive you have to be about not only creating costumes but first and foremost, creating a culture and world for the characters and general aesthetic direction
We have talked about Susan Hilferty in Basic Design several times. Spring Awakening is one of my favorite musicals. I want to go to Yale Drama for my Masters Degree. Costumes is one of the fields that I am looking in to. I like hearing about different costume designers and their work. The Wicked costumes designs that she did are beautiful. I saw some of the renderings on the web and through a friend I got an email with photos of the actual costumes. They were amazing.
