'Stomp' returns to Benedum Center for eight-performance run

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Words and singing play no role in the show 'Stomp,' an international touring success story now in its 16th season. It is a force of nature built out of percussion and dance, with lots of attitude and energy.
'Stomp' returns Tuesday to the Benedum Center, Downtown, for an eight-performance run, including weekend matinees."

I unfortunately have never seen a performance of Stomp, but the concept has always been extremely exciting and original to me. Music can be made from anything, and far to often classical music or Broadway music has this stereotype of being snobby and loaded with money. It's great to see a show where people making music with just the elements available around them has been so successful. Great entertainment and great music does not have to be costly or feature famous, or snobby people.

I completely agree. I really think theater should be exciting and different, but still relatable our various cultures. This show proves that one doesn't need all the gimmicks of broadway to make a show a huge success. I have such a hard time accepting the fact that so much money and resources are needed for theater and somewhat wasted. We have so much already, its important to reuse and recycle whenever possible.

Stomp was probably one of the first theatrical performances I witnessed. It was by far one of the most unique things I had seen, and have seen since then, although many groups have tried to copy it. I would be interested to see this when it gets to Pittsburgh as it has been almost ten years since I last saw it. I do wonder, now having been so involved in theatre, if and how the story carries through the show. Is is similar to Cirque where there is a common theme or is it simply about the music?

As a tap-dancer, this is the kind of thing I go ga-ga over. This is a concept that has limitless possibilities, so I'm glad to see that the show has some new routines as well as the classics (such as the trash can lid section). It's also such a rare experience to go to a show where the story isn't handed to you. It's very cool and different to see a show and have a completely different interpretation of the story from that of the person sitting next to you.

I saw a performance of Stomp when I was much younger, but it was such an original idea and concept that it stuck with me. It's just great idea that's been practiced to perfection at this point. What's even better is that they keep changing it as time goes on, adding new elements, and trying new things. There's so many different possiblities, and ways to make new sounds and rhythms. For me, because I'm interested in sound design, you get to see all these people using different materials, and getting different sounds and ideas based off them, it's really interesting.

I believe that STOMP is an incredibly entertaining and enticing work. The idea of something from nothing (music from garbage) is truly something that needs to be explored more. Especially in the economic climate that we live in today. This is also one of the first theatrical experiences that I can remember. This is also the kind of production that can be done over and over again. It is always intriguing to see which pieces of garbage can be used to make which sounds. I hope to make it to this while it is in town.

I have seen Stomp twice and I am thrilled that it is coming to Pittsburgh. I hope that I'll be able to see it because I think that it is such an incredible show. I think it makes the audience see the world in a different way, what once was trash is now an instrument of personal expression. I know the first time I saw Stomp, I came home and grabbed some pots and pans and started banging away, much to my mother's dismay. I think this show is remarkably accessible and makes people think of theatre and the world differently.

i have never seen STOMP and am so excited that they're coming here. in my high school talent show, my freshman and sophomore year, we had a STOMP act, but not for my junior or senior year they weren't in it. it was very disappointing because it was so cool. they would go into the audience and play around our auditorium. it was fantastic. i cant wait to see how professionals do it compared to high school kids.

I plan on seeing this show when it is in town, and am really looking forward to it. The way Stomp can tell stories and entertain through rhythm and various objects is something refreshing to see in a theater. I'm also curious to see how they use different elements of design to create the space around them.
