'Little House on the Prairie' New Jersey bound

Variety: "After rumors that the tuner would make a quicker-than-expected leap to Broadway, though, the property went back into development, effectively hibernating for the past year as producers and creatives ironed out kinks. Now the show is set to begin performances at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse on Sept. 10 -- the first five-week leg of a national tour that may bypass the Rialto altogether."

Not going to Broadway?! I love this idea. The "Little House" stories are stories the I, and many many many Americans, grew up with. Given the relative "inaccessibility" of New York City to the rest of the country, putting this show on the road gives so many more people to opportunity to share in Laura Ingalls' story. I was very skeptical when I first heard that the "Little House" stories were going to be made into a musical, but the Guthrie folks put on a good production apparently, and I'm excited for them to share this story with the world.

I also think this is a smart move on the part of the Guthrie. They are making theatre more accessible at a time when we are all strapped for cash. By taking it out of New York it changes the cost dramatically. Even if they still charge NYC prices for the tickets the cost of staying in the area is probably half that of NYC at least and an easier place to bring a car. Instead of flying and having to take cabs/public transit many people would be able to drive which I think will appeal to most right now. I'm excited to see how this is going to work but maybe it will inspire more groups to go outside the "norm".
