Post Gazette: "Pittsburgh Public Theater's 'Ella: A Musical,' a portrait of the first lady of song, jazzes up a fall theater season that also heralds the return of the Radio City Rockettes.
The last time they were here, the high-kickers from NYC were among the hardest tickets in town. This time around, they kick-start a PNC Broadway Across America -- Pittsburgh season that includes two Tony-winning entries, 'In the Heights' and 'August: Osage County.'"

it is really really wonderful that the pittsburgh theater scene is so vibrant (especially for someone like me who comes from a city with almost no theater work). I look forward to getting to see as many of these productions as i can (who's with me???) I find myself limited by two things however: Money, and Time. One thing I would love to see from the SOD is a bboard or some other way for the whole school to organize groups to go to shows. The other half of that is a way for those going to see those shows to get discounted tickets. Its a significant amount of money to see a lot of these things! I'm not sure how to go about that, but I would love to hear people's ideas.
The reason that this theatre season has something for everyone is because they are doing old popular shows that they know everyone will like. There is Les Mis, Rent, Stomp, Christmas Carol, and Forever Plaid. There is nothing really new here. I'm not really surprised that theatres are doing classic shows to bring in the people. We always see old shows coming back every year, but this season seems to have a higher number than other years.
Kelli is right--the classics are what people know and love, and what they will continue to pay money for time and time again. There are a handful of shows in town this year that I might be interested in seeing, but I am with Brian in that Time and Money are my main limiting factors in going to see theater around Pittsburgh. I was able to go see a few things last year and really enjoyed them...one thing I have no desire to see but am quite intrigued about is "101 Dalmations: The Musical." How the heck does that work onstage?!
While there are some oldies but goodies in the season, there are a couple newer shows that aren't as well-known that I'm really glad are coming to town. I saw In the Heights this summer in New York, and I would see that again in a heartbeat. However, there is the ever-present issues of time and money that dictate when one can see shows. I really want to see In the Heights again, but if I'm going to take a day and spend money to see a show, it would make more sense to go to one I haven't seen before.
I am really excited about all of the show that are coming to Pittsburgh this season. After working on the Susan project where she assigned us different theatres in Pittsburgh, I feel like I know a lot more about the theatre district here. I do agree with Kelly that the classics sell. It is very true. The theatre I reported on was the Benedum. It is so beautiful. I want to go see Cats when it comes there because I have seen it once before but I would like to go back to see the costumes again. The other thing that is great about this article is that CMU Drama is mentioned and what we are up to this season.
