Conductor steals scenes in 'La Boheme'

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "The excellent production of 'La Boheme' that Pittsburgh Opera unveiled in 2003 returned to the Benedum Center Saturday night in a performance of mixed vocal accomplishment, memorable conducting and orchestral playing, and often appealing staging by a new director."

It is nice to see that people other than performers are getting recognition. While the orchestra tends to be one of the more recognized groups in the performing arts, they definitely don't get the acknowledgement they deserve. The orchestra is one of the most important groups, they drive the pace of the show. Everything goes off the pit, the SM, the cast, etc. Also, the music is often the driving force behind the life of the show and a lot of the meaning can be shown through the music rather than the lyrics

I'm so happy to see this veritably unrecognized group appreciated. The performers of a show are not always the ones hogging the stage and the music literally keeps a show running, in time and organized. It also keeps the audience engaged --- and really, without that, what is the point?

I agree with chris, its nice to see someone other than the performers being showered with praise and recognition. Often when i read show reviews, the performers are given the most attention, which can get depressing to someone who works backstage.

The best critics are the ones who acknowledge all aspects of a production, not just the actors, and this guy did a pretty good job. Especially with an opera, it is very important to acknowledge the orchestra and it's conductor.
