The effects of the economy on the school's budget and staff are ridiculous. I'm afraid that our education is going to get cut into as well with all of the budget cuts that are being made with faculty and supplies in the coming years.
I'm a little confused. The school is offering voluntary leaves of absenses for a month? Is this for just staff or faculty as well? it seems to me, that while we do need to conserve money, having people leave for a month strains the rest of the staff. We don't seem to have any supurfluous staff, so other people would have to pick up the "slack" in their absense.
Scary. I would have thought that plans were in tact for this kind of disaster. Asking staff to leave for a little bit until the university gains some money back is just not biting the bullett. It scares me also that they'd think of asking the people who are responsible for our education to leave for a while as opposed to downsizing on how much concerts cost us, or how much money is put into planning campus events. Let's get smart people.
On the bright side, the faculty who do this still receive benefits like health benefits if they take the time off.
Ultimately though I hope the school and the country figure something out about cuts being made into education.
I believe that this is a better approach then firing people. Although one is not certain whether or not there will be enough volunteers to take time off, hopefully this will help some.
