Top 4 Reasons People Call In Sick
ien: "While illness actually does account for 34% of unscheduled absences from work, other top reasons include family issues at 22%; personal needs, 18%; entitlement mentality, 13%; and stress, also at 13%. The numbers come from the CCH Unscheduled Absence Survey 2007; the survey, conducted for the past 17 years, in 2007 contacted 317 HR executives in U.S. companies of all sizes, across major industry segments, in 48 states."

I find it to be somewhat ridiculous how hard it is to get time away from work with some employers. The most shocking thing is managers who know the system doesn't work, ie don't mention school when you put in the request, but don't try to change it. The most effective method I have ever seen in the implementation of comp. time. The accumulation of hours worked above normal salary hours is especially useful in the entertainment industry to allow people who work a large amount of hours to open a show for instance, be able to take the time off after the show has opened, which reduces the likelihood of burning out.
I can definitely relate to these statistics. This summer my family was moving and my Dad was under a ridiculous amount of stress. He could have really benefited from a day off but his company policy wouldn't let him unless he was sick. I think that companies should allow their employees a certain number of days to do with as they see fit. It allows days off for all those other reasons besides being sick.
I really like the idea of a general Personal Time Off program. It allows people to take care of personal business outside of work with out being penalized at work. There are times when life happens and issues need to be resolved during work hours. It also makes the employees responsible for their own days. I think a program would also keep people from breaking company policies about sick days and calling in fake sick days.
I am guessing some of the HR depts. numbers are a bit off because of the times people fibbed about being sick.
Also, people should not feel they have to save days for later in the year in case they get sick. If you are sick you should go home and spare the health of your coworkers.
It is interesting to see why people use their sick days. The options they give to employees to help with problems at home and work are also great benefits that should reduce the number of sick days taken by employees every year. Wellness programs and heath care are basic plans that assist people in staying healthy and staying at work.
