Amsterdam company examines pretense with 'Liga'

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "'Liga,' which will have its U.S. premiere tonight as a presentation of the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, is predominantly physical. The minimal text is performed in English."

There were a bunch of us at the opening night performance. Many of us didn't know what had just happened after we walked out of the theater. It was like I was being transported to the other shore again, but a Dutch other shore, not a Chinese other shore. There were moments of pure hilarity, moments of intense awkwardness, moments of sadness, but non of the emotions seemed congruous with each other. In the same way as some critics have described The Other Shore as a big acting exercise, Liga felt the same way some times.

The big silent moments during the performance were awkward! I guess sometimes they felt unmotivated for us -- perhaps they would make more sense to an audience from a different background.

I don't know if I got a lot from this performance. I agree with Jeremy in that it was like "The Other Shore" but Dutch. I sat next to an actor during the show and he seemed like he was getting a lot out of it, so I also agree with it being a more "acting" show. That said, there were some moments when I got "lost" in what was happening onstage and it was very interesting to watch, but overall I was pretty disappointed.
