NY Post: "The man holding Broadway hostage is the scion of a family of stagehands who couples a polite, gentlemanly demeanor with brass-knuckles boardroom skills."
Theatre has always been known for being a family business and stagehands are no different. The funny thing is that the Local 1 president earns over $200,000 a year, not a bad wage in NYC but by no means a huge one either. The real issue is that producers want to essentially cut how much stagehands make and no one wants a pay cut, especially just before the holidays.
The way this article paints Claffey is pretty ludicrous. At first he's a blood thirsty boss, set to ruin everyone's visit to NYC, then he's a polite young man following in his father's footsteps. Whichever way it goes, the NY Post is pretty obviously not with Local 1 in this fight.
