IATSE WARNS MEMBERS THEY COULD LOSE JOBS FOR SUPPORTING STRIKE
ContactMusic: "Two days after a Hollywood Teamsters official appeared to encourage members of the union as 'individuals' not to cross writers' picket lines 'whether it is sanctioned or not,' the technicians' union IATSE notified its members that they could lose their jobs if they followed suit."

I find it kind of ironic that the IATSE local in LA is telling their members that they cannot honor picket lines while the NY local has authorized a strike and asked other unions to honor their lines. Doesn't seem like all of the locals are playing nicely with the other unions. Also as a manager who is negotiating contracts wouldn't you want no strike provisions with every union? I wonder if they show up but nothing can be done because of the absence of other unions is they still get paid. Not a bad deal.
A agree with aaron about the hypocritical nature of not supporting other strikes while expecting them to support IATSE's. However, it is impressive how iron-fisted IATSE is being about the issue with the "work or be fired"-like statement. IATSE seems like the kind of union that honors their contract to the degree that they expect their co-signers to honor it. Very old school.
This does seem a bit hypocritical, but I can see how the writer's wants have little or nothing to do with IATSE's wants. Just because the writers are striking doesn't mean that there isn't work, and if the IATSE local desires to have a strong place to stand on later negotiations, then they need to uphold their contracts now.
I can see way IATSE feels the way it does. There is no reason to jeopardize their relationship with the studio over someone else’s battle. I don’t agree with the mentality that unions should stick together against management.
