For the standard airport wait, you can arrtive a few hours early with the certainty that you will get on your flight. In DC, however, I have been forced to wait over 4 hours before I got to go to my gate because of issues beyond my control. I missed my flight by a half hour and took a train to catch my transfer in NYC. Sometimes being early just isn't good enough, because who can predict that you need to be at the airport 5 hours early even when the standard security wait is only 2.5 hrs? - Maddie Regan
