I feel that when taking a a musical and play of equal rank, i feel that the musical is 10x more interesting. There is an added element of music/lyric that is not part of a straight play. Though play's are a very powerful medium, a musical, I find, is more powerful. If we take the current obvious example of Sideshow, i dont think that the power of the story and the emotion the audience feels towards Daisy and Violet at the end of the act 1 (i got a bit teary eyed) would be as possible if they werent singing a heartwrehchingly beautiful song. I guess its just a personal preference, but i'm a musical guy all the way.
