RE-CREATIONS MUDDLE TONYS

New York Post Online Edition: "SHOULD 'A Chorus Line' and 'Les Mis erables' - two re vivals that are pretty much carbon copies of the original productions - be eligible for Tony Awards?"

the intellectual copyright laws are so vague. Who owns the rights to a show when it is recreated step for step? Or having the basic structure still in place but new details. I would hope that the Tony's would be honoring new work or new and compelling theatre rather than what has been done before.

The Tony's should be giving awards to the innovators, the people with new works or new versions. Maybe the actors/actresses have the right to an award of the remake because acting ability should be judged seperatly from the show. But anything else shouldn't have the right to a Tony. You shouldn't be awarded for a revival that is simply there to make money, and not to innovate the story.

I completely agree that the Tonys should be given to innovaters. There could be a slight possibility that Idina Menzel simply got the Tony for Wicked just cause she could belt, and that the automation could lift her up, because I know the people she was up against were definitely better. The Tonys have to start being about theatre that enriches our lives, not theatre that has a lot of spectacle. These are all good shows, don't get me wrong, but some just need more recognition than others.
