Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts
Entertainment Central Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh has produced many amazing firsts including the Salk polio vaccine, the Ferris wheel, and first movie theater. The city has continued to generate new firsts including those of the arts and entertainment variety since 2004 with the first Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts. Since then the Festival has also occurred in 2008 and 2013, attracting over a million visitors to each one.

I think it's really neat that the community is taking the time to celebrate and display innovation with such a fun idea of 'Firsts'. I had now idea that this festival existed but now I couldn't imagine missing it. it is great that the creators of this festival wanted to showcase not only the work of Pittsburgh artists, but also artists who are innovating out time from around the world. I think it is interesting how they want to push the idea that Pittsburgh is a city that should be recognized as an international space for art. In just the four years I have been in Pittsburgh, I have seen in grow with innovative and exciting art and art that involves different aspects never thought to be combined before. Overall I think this festival sounds like a great way to prompt innovation in the arts and I think Pittsburgh is a great place to do that.
This really is a very cultural, artistic, and community event. Recently a professor emailed drama all about the tickets to these events, and that as students we can get half price off. I didn't think too much of it, and wasn't all that interested as the email did not go into detail. This article gives a good overview of the creator and founders of the festival, but what I was really interested in were all the different performance. I have always wanted to experience the public visual art, with the projections on buildings and going down the street. Sadly, most of the dates are not going to work for my schedule, but I am really looking forward to the pictures and videos that come out of the festival. I love how this is all new works, for Pittsburgh. It seems like there really is something for any kind of person, no matter their background or previous connection to performance art or theater.
When I first visited Pittsburgh ten years ago, I did not know that I would be back here for grad school. Upon my return, I almost didn't recognized the change that has occurred in this city in terms of the growth in arts and culture. The fact that people are actively working to make Pittsburgh a center for international innovation and artwork is a beautiful thing, and makes me think of my own blue-collar home city of Buffalo. I am so glad that this is occurring while I am here, and have already planned out the must-sees for me from scrolling down this incredible list. I also love how diverse and creative the range of these projects are, showcasing everything from "typical" theatrical performances to tunnels of light and sound. I am especially excited to see/hear "Blind Cinema", as it seems a key goal of the Festival is to share different perspectives and this seems like an interesting new way to do it. Trying to explain what you're experiencing is difficult for everyone, and I think that this piece has the potential to be very interesting and different.
