pantone announces 'ultra violet' as 2018 color of the year

www.designboom.com: following marsala in 2015, rose quartz and serenity in 2016, and greenery in 2017, pantone has announced that its 2018 color of the year is… ‘ultra violet’. described as ‘inventive’ and ‘imaginative’, the color experts say that the shade communicates ‘originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future’.

How does Pantone determine what the color of the year is? Is it based on what is used a lot? Is it a committee? And does it help Pantone sell more ink? If not, why do it? This seems a bit pointless and arbitrary to me. I suppose it is a nice shade of purple though. Also, while this shade of purple could be used to evoke the emotions discussed, that could be done with a lot of other colors too, and I’m sure there could be other uses for this purple.

Also, separately, ulta violet light isn’t in the visible spectrum. Seems weird to name a color after a light that is by definition not a color. They could’ve called it “vibrant violet” or something. That sounds more exciting, plus alliteration is always fun.

Still, despite the fact I think this whole color of the year thing doesn’t make much sense, I do really like this color, and wouldn’t be against seeing it used frequently.

I always get inexplicably excited for pantone’s color of the year announcement. I don’t really care for their overly posh and exuberant explanations of the reasons behind why they chose the color and how it’s going to change the world for the better, but I don love the aftermath of their decision. People go crazy over having things in the color of the year and hip fashion companies appeal to that and produce so many clothing lines and accessories in the color of the year just to up sale values moving forward and ride the hype for as long as they can. And wouldn’t you just know it, ultra violet is very close to my brother and his fiancée’s wedding color so it is now going to be so easy for me to find a bridesmaids dress to fit into the theme while also not being grotesquely expensive or just flat out grotesque.

Pantone is more than just an ink company they are the Pantone Color Institute and are Global authorities on color. They are one of several groups across the country that not only study and analyze color and color trends but that are continually working to standardize color particularly in the CMYK printing process and in helping the world to accurately communicate color. They also focus on branding of companies through color for product development, marketing and design choices.

I did a little digging and the process by which Pantone selects the color of the year is actually quite interesting. They gather together representatives from the various color authorities across the globe and look at the current color trends and then try to predict where those trends will go which leads them to the color of the year which aims to influence and create new trends for companies and marketing, especially throughout the internet world-wide. Which if yo ask me seems a bit ambitious.

I never knew that pantone chose a color of the year. I think its a interesting concept, especially how it seems like a very arbitrary decision, about what they think the most important color for style and forward thinking is. In Kyrie's comment above she explains that it is a process for selecting the color with many people. I probably would not care too much about this, however I really like the ultra violet color. It is very similar to the color of my glasses lenses that I wore most of this year. When I first got my Irlen purple glasses it really changed my ability to function and read. So now, I am very partial to purple especially this type of darker shade. I also have been reading a lot on the way color influences the brain and behavior, and I would be interested in seeing if these kind of science has anything to do with what they choose as the color of the year.
