Ballet companies throughout the U.S. reimagine “The Nutcracker”
Salon.com: “It’s fair to say you’ve never seen a musical quite like this,” says Kevin Weisman (best known for his role in “Alias”) during the introduction for “The MeshugaNutcracker.” A Jewish take on the classic Christmas ballet, “The MegshugaNutcracker” opens with a call to “grab your yarmulke, it’s time for Chanukah, a musical just for you, whether gentile or a Jew.”

I have always loved watching The Nutcracker every year with my family on TV or in a small local ballet theatre at home. Since coming to school, I have learned that the case is not the same for a good portion of theatre people. Many of my peers loathe The Nutcracker for a number of reasons, but the two most popular seem to be: 1. The fake snow, and 2. The fact that they have worked on the show dozens of times. I suppose this speaks to why some ballet companies decide to switch it up a little. As a creative industry, artists often become maddened when there is little room for them to actually create, so hopefully this introduction of new themes into the classic production of The Nutcracker help people find renewal in it. While I am not sure I would personally enjoy non-standard productions of The Nutcracker, purely because I already enjoy the classic, I am sure many people would find solace in them.
