Obviously in an ideal world, I would 100% agree Renner, that it should not be the actor's job to worry about the contracts and salaries of their co-stars. However, I believe that it is important for male co-stars to stand with their female colleagues on this issue. It is ridiculous that in 2015, women are still being told in a very real way that their work is worth less than their male counterparts. The quote from Lawrence at the end of this article really hit home. "I didn’t want to seem 'difficult' or 'spoiled.' At the time, that seemed like a fine idea, until I saw the payroll on the Internet and realized every man I was working with definitely didn’t worry about being 'difficult' or 'spoiled.'"
As someone who pride them self on being an assertive woman, it is horrible that we have to realise that we may be perceived as "bossy" and "difficult" if we try and be as strong and forthright as the men around us.
I think that what Renner said in this article is completely valid and slightly eye opening. I didn’t realize that actors and actresses let other people negotiate their finances. I’m not actually that surprised when I think about it; they are some of the richest people in the world. Why wouldn’t they have someone else do their finances? I would do the same if I could. But this means that the actors and actresses themselves aren’t why the wage gap is so huge: it’s the financial officers in charge of the negotiations. It’s a widely known fact that females get paid less than their male equivalents, and so I’m sure that financial officers use that to their advantage when negotiating salaries. It’s not about the people; it’s just about the money that a producer can save. Although I would love to be rich one day, I don’t ever want to be put in the same category as people like that who only think about money and not the impact that they are creating on the people around them or the people affected by the ripple effect.
I was aware before this point that actors and actresses at this scale do not negotiate for themselves. They do, however, have the final say in negotiations, and they sign the final contracts. They also have the power to say that they want to negotiate in tandem with their partners for the sake of gender equality. I like Jeremy Renner as an actor, but his reaction here is like sticking his head in the sand to avoid being seen. In order to affect change, we must all be a part of it. Despite the fact that I believe that Renner means well, saying that you focus on your craft and leave negotiations to other people is a cop-out when we are dealing with social change. A person in his position has the power to impact others in a big way whether he wants it or not, and now he needs to accept responsibility for it.
I have read and commented on Lawrence’s article, and the entire situation is a reflection on what most women feel every day, and for anyone to say that it’s not their job to get involved in the difference is wrong; it’s their social obligation.
