Mozart rock musical heading to Broadway and West End?

Mozart News: A rock musical based on the life and music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has been licensed to all major territories after phenomenally successful run in France. "Mozart, L'Opera Rock", which has taken over $100m during its three-year run in France, could be seen in the US, Japan, South Korea, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

This seems like an interesting concept for a musical, and I hope that the West End and perhaps Broadway can adapt it in a way that is relatable for English audiences. While there seems to be a gap between what the English and French perceive musical theatre to be, I think it is still possible for the producers of this production to make it work, and hopefully they do! The idea of writing a musical about Mozart is innovative and fresh, and is something that excites me, and I'm sure it would for others, too. Musical Theatre has a stereotype for having a certain kind of music. Incorporating a different kind of music into a musical is something that isn't done much, with a few exceptions. Hopefully the producers of this musical do not just turn the pop songs into musical theatre songs, but instead, I hope they stay true to some of the music in which Mozart so brilliantly created himself.

Think this sounds like a exciting new musical. I did throughly enjoy the music video, even though that I had no idea what they were saying. So I do think this could be something that the American Public would enjoy. If they decide to stick to pop music for the American version hopefully that is a acceptable to America. I do agree with Jess that this musical about Mozart is very exciting and inventive. This idea just seems so much more exciting to me for Broadway then some of the other ideas I have heard of.

i don't expect too much on this musical. well i did enjoy the original music, but only the part of music. personally i really don't like musical that too "technical", call me a troditional theater person. i just don't like it, when technical part plays a more important part than the music. it makes me feel really bad when people get out of the theater and all they remember is how amazing the technical effects are, that kills me. the word goes there, i have to say, compare with the new france musical, i do love the organic american musical much more.

I would be very interested to see what this show turns out like when they modify it for American audiences; the point the article makes about French musicals often lacking a very strong story line is pretty accurate, but that can't and surely won't be overlooked in the Broadway adaptation. French musicals often are more about the spectacle than the plot, since that's what plays are for, so I got curious and looked this show up, and I can tell you, it was spectacular. The costumes, sets, singing, everything about it was absolutely grandiose, and I really want to see what Broadway producers do with a show like this one based on what it's already been.

Telling the life story of Mozart through a collection of synthesized & auto-tuned pop songs and calling it a "rock opera" is like trying to perform the works of Shakespeare through clips of dialogue from "The Jersey Shore" or giving a retrospective of Jackson Pollack's portfolio through carefully 3D-rendered CAD files.

Next up, Beethoven as told through the music of Lady Gaga.

Sooooo....it's an edgier/sexier/updated/stage/rock opera/pop/musical version of the 1984 Milos Forman film 'Amadeus'.....?

I have to admit the music video and song are both well produced and interesting. I would be very interested to see the translation from music video to stage production. With a high price-tag I would be confident that it this would be possible, but high production value from film doesn't always translate so well.

It is always interesting to see an information about a musical that I have heard. Particularly for this musical, if I remember correctly, I heard this musical was going to be adapted into Korean and would be playing with some of my favorite actors. I heard this went very successful. Reading this article, it is amazing how the producer tried to be original too by making it "a rock musical." Especially, turning a story of life of a famous composer into a play is very fascinating because it is both educational for children and amusing to hear the famous musics that he composed to Mozart-fans. Just looking at the number of costumes, I can see how big this production is projected. Also, selling over 750,000 just surprises me so much. I think in terms of storyline, I can see that it will be very tight and well organized, since Mozart's life is full of interesting struggles and successes. I hope someday I can go watch this play.

I'm not sure I like the idea of this musical. I agree with Joe, the first thing I thought of when I read the article was the it was just going to be a musical version of "Amadeus". I don't think taking the life of a composer and putting it on Broadway is a very original idea as some people have stated, but rather a cop-out and a way to try to make a quick buck on an idea that has already been done. A rock opera about a composer has already been created, though it was never intended for staging (Beethoven's Last Night by Trans Siberian Orchestra). I don't think something like this would sell as well in America as it has in France and other European venues.

This looks really fascinating. It reminds me a little bit of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, in that both feature biographies of historical characters with a more modern edgy score and design concept. I honestly hope that this will come to both Broadway and the West End. One thing that the article doesn't address, though, is the translation, which can make or destroy a musical's transition to a new country and market. Also, will the show find the same success in the US if the pop music from the original score is unrecognizable? Hopefully, we'll find out. Also, the song with the article is really catchy.

I am so surprised this hasn't already been a musical. There is a quote from a play and i cant remember which one( think producers maybe) but it says you cant have a good show with out a gay and a jew. And with musicals such as avenue Q, Book of Mormon, Zanna Do, etc, it just seems logical to have a hit musical with this subject.

From the brief description, I don't know if this would actually be a good show to sit through. I feel like it would be really fun but it might be sort of alarming to suddenly see Motzart singing pop songs. At the same time, this sounds like a very interesting portrayal of his life and the fact that the american view of musical theater and the french view of musical theater are fairly different might make this unlike anything anyone here has ever seen. I'm definitely interested in seeing the show and even more curious about how the soundtrack will match.
