Cirque du Soleil plots Michael Jackson show post-‘Zarkana,’ ‘Immortal’ success

Las Vegas Sun News: Reveling in the success of the Michael Jackson touring show “Immortal,” Cirque du Soleil President Daniel Lamarre has revealed details of the full-time-residency King of Pop production set to open at Mandalay Bay in May. Daniel told me: “We are talking May 23 for the first-night of previews, with the grand gala opening June 21. The Montreal studio right now is moving and shaking with Michael Jackson rehearsals. It will be totally different from the touring show. “The tour was a rock arena concert, but this will be highly theatrical. That’s the big difference, but there will still not be a Michael Jackson character in it.”

I am very glad to hear that they are going to open a new show in Vegas but my one fear is that they will not get the attendance that they are getting form the touring show. Compared to the new one, the touring one is always going to a different city every few days and new group of people to pull from. With the Vegas group everyone is coming there to see shows and there is so many that it may get lost. I would hate to see another Elvis show happen since Cirque has had their ups and down over the last few years. I hope the best to everyone that is involved in the show and that Cirque has another hit on their hands.

This seems like a really cool new show coming from Cirque. I've seen LOVE, their Beatles show, so it makes sense that they're now making a Michael Jackson show, in light of the tour's success and their current success in Las Vegas. Personally I'm surprised to hear how quickly all this is coming together!! I saw a documentary on the making of LOVE and it was in planning for 10 years before it made it to Vegas. While I'm sure they learned a lot from the Michael Jackson tour, Cirque seems to emphasize that the two shows are very very different. Which leads me to wonder how they can create the show in such a short amount of time! It'll be interesting to see how polished it is, and if they do indeed make their goal of a June 21st premiere. I also wonder if the Michael Jackson show will be as popular as a non-touring show. While LOVE met extraordinary reviews, Michael and his music have been the source of more debate that The Beatles have and it'll be interesting to see how everyone reacts.

I could not be more thrilled that the resident version of Cirque's Michael Jackson show is going to be so different from the tour. I saw the tour when it first opened in Las Vegas, and, while I know it has changed since, I do have to say that I was somewhat disappointed by it. It was too much of a concert and not enough of a Cirque show. It sounds like the company is ready to bring it to that next level in Vegas, which is a smart move because people go into Cirque shows in Vegas with extremely high expectations. Cirque his a rough patch there with the closing of 'Zed', 'Zaia', and 'Elvis', but it seems like they are making/going to make a strong comeback and I am thrilled to see it. Cirque is a fun company that is full of heart and integrity, and that continues to give back through efforts like the One Drop initiative. The success of shows like 'Immortal', the new Michael Jackson show, and 'Zarkana' will continue to help the company do good throughout the world.
