Post Gazette: "In these days when a job, any job, is hard to come by, the song 'I Hope I Get It' gives 'A Chorus Line' a sense of urgency, a relevance that never seems to fade."
I never really thought about how relevant 'Chorus Line' is to today's workforce. It applies not just to theater artists, but to many working class Americans who, many for the first time, find themselves in the same situation as actors, dancers, and theatrical designers...without work. Chorus Line is definitely a moving show with many important themes and it provides a window into the world of theater that some people may not ever see.
Chorus Line is that type of a show that can apply to so many people in so many different settings. I think that it has hit home with so many people in our profession, because it is difficult to find work and keep our heads above water. Now that the economy is going to the pits, we see that this show is connecting more and more to the larger population. We're going to see more people relating to this show, maybe more people will start going to see it on tour.
Chorus Line will keep on coming back into focus because the economy is never a stable thing. It works in a cycle and because of it every few generations will find meaning in Chorus Line. Its just that kind of great musical.
I absolutely love A Chorus Line because of how it pokes fun at our own theatre community, is so very simple in scale (relative to other Broadway productions now), and it's a joy to watch a musical that you can relate to and find relevant to today. Despite Chorus Line's age, the simplicity of people putting themselves out there to get a job is very real these days. Not only that, but the personal stories of the cast members we learn about are so easy to relate to as well, I think just about anyone could get something from the show.
I agree and am a bit surprised that Chorus Line is so applicable to today's world. This is especially true now in the economic climate. Also, it more specifically related to the performing arts field.
It is so refreshing to hear that older shows are still relevant to modern audiences. sometimes doing/seeing the same shows multiple times wears down on you- but its all about looking for the new, more relevant information.
