Tuition, room and board increase at CMU

Post Gazette: "The university announced the increase today, noting it is the smallest in 34 years. The tuition varies by the year the student entered, although the increase is 2.94 percent for all undergraduates. Those who entered in 2004 or 2005 will pay $36,832; those who entered in 2006 will pay $38,088; and those who entered in 2007, $39,560."

I don't understand why different grades pay different amounts. It seems silly to me, yet i am glad that i still pay under the 40 grand mark for tuition. I hate that they keep raising costs. It makes so many people who go here no longer be able to afford it, and that interrupts their education. Plus, in times like these, people (cause they can't get jobs) go to school/back to school and that means more money for the university. Why doesnt this help lower our costs?

I think it is so important that the university is taking into consideration the hard times that many families are facing. Tuition increases are inevitable but hopefully the university will continue to find ways to make these increases minimal.

I am glad that the university takes not only their monetary losses, but the losses of the students as well. It is not useful or beneficial to anyone if someone becomes unable to pay and has to drop out. Hopefully all other financial changes can be kept to a minimum as well.

The differences in grades comes from different locking in points, I believe. When you begin at the university you are expected to pay a certain amount each year. The next year it goes up a little bit more. It really sucks this year that everything is increasing but at least its not a huge, huge increase. Hopefully the school or the government finds a way to keep costs lower or at least at a smaller increase.

I cannot believe the ridiculous amount we pay this university. Yes, we are one of the best in the nation. And yes, our education will repay itself ten-fold. However the university seems to be doing nothing to combat costs. The university recently introduced an initiative, along with Pitt, to put a number that you could text at bus stops on campus, which would text you back with the bus schedule for that stop. While thats a cool idea, and will be helpful, when you find out the next day that they're increasing your tuition 3%, on top of being one of the most expensive schools in the nation, but still seem to have the money to support quazzi-helpful inventions like that.

I do not think merely increasing the tuition every year is the best solution. The school needs to brainstorm other ways of getting funding and it would be helpful if the government included tuition costs somehow in the new economic stimulus plan. I just think it's sad when someone who want's to come here and is talented cannot just because they can't afford it.
