Barriers to Entry

Nevada Film Office: I recently read an article in which Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven; The Girlfriend Experience; Sex, Lies, and Videotape) said the future of filmmaking is iPhones. You can read the article here: http://www.slashfilm.com/steven-soderbergh-iphones-filmmaking/

Do you agree? I do, well, sort of.

I agree with the Eric Preiss, it's hard to imagine that soon people will only use IPhones to create blockbuster movies. However, plenty of people are on YouTube sharing their stories. Many of these people started out with just an IPhone or a similar technology. Though many YouTubers are not doing traditional film or theater storytelling, they are attracting audiences and sometimes draw millions of viewers. IPhones and Youtube, and other video apps such as SnapChat, have created a new way of storytelling that may make it to film or television one day. Also, IPhones have the ability to let people learn storytelling and cinematography, who may have not otherwise had the opportunity. IPhones could be the tool to teach people until they can make it past the barriers that are currently in the industry. Even if it doesn’t become the new way of making movies, IPhones are allowing people to express themselves in a cinematographic way.
