I’m so glad that Tech Shop will not just be allowed to die. There were many gig workers in Pittsburg who depended on the tools, space, and specialized equipment there to make their living. I heard one theory that factories existed because the equipment and supplies were so large and expensive that normal people could not do the same work in their homes. Now, sewing machines, computers, and woodworking tools are easily obtainable, but there are still many things that are just too costly, large, or dangerous for one person to have in their home. Tech shop was like a tiny factory so that individuals could have access to those sorts of supplies and work for themselves in a way that they would otherwise not be able to. The classes that they proved are also important for introducing a new set of people into skills that might otherwise die out or only be available to the very few.
