Steve Miller, After Induction, Slams Rock Hall Of Fame

Pollstar: Steve Miller had just performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, but he wasn’t finished.

In fact, he was just getting started. The new inductee ripped the rock hall in a backstage interview, calling the evening a “lazy” night with “a bunch of fat cats” that was tantamount to a bad reality show – only he used a stronger epithet than “bad.”

So, I have kind of been following the events that happened at this years Rock Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony via Twitter this year and I had heard that Steve Miller was upset but I didn’t really investigate further. After reading this article, I can totally see where he is coming from. Having been to the Rock Hall of Fame, it really does feel like there is an absence of artistic intent with the displays, and I think that may have carried into the ceremony. What was not addressed in the article was that Steve Miller called for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to be inclusive of women. From what I read, he said it during his acceptance speech. I am really thrilled that this was addressed since not a single woman was a part of the inducted this year. There are plenty of women who have made history in rock and roll and they deserved to be honored.

Isn't the soul of rock n' roll the idea of not caring about what everyone thinks of you? Steve Miller is from an era of rock that thought just that. He was a few years past Dylan and on the tail end of Jimi Hendrix, and knows what rock n' roll really is, and was incepted for. They did it because they wanted to incite change in society, and to make music. He's right. The Rock N' Roll hall of fame really goes against all merits of Rock N' Roll. FIrst of all, it is caring- A LOT. And second of all, it's about making money and not necessarily honoring music itself.
ANd that brings me to another Rock N' Roll soap box. I love rock. But mostly, 60's and 70's rock, when it was first incepted and then branched out into glam, punk and other rocks. I feel like there's a certain rawness, and inherent danger in early rock music that's not present today. People were stabbing each other at shows, and really putting themselves on the line to enjoy this type of music. But, who are the big rock names nowadays- The Black Keys? The Strokes? Where is the artistic danger in what they're doing. They're just emulating the rock that I love and profiting off of it. And that's what rock has become and what Steve Miller is angry about and I agree, I think that there are still expirimenters out here yet, like Radiohead, but I'd say most of the danger and most of the soul today lives in Hip-Hop artists like Kendrick Lamar, as opposed to rock music.
