‘Hamilton’ Producers Will Change Job Posting, but Not Commitment to Diverse Casting

The New York Times: The hit musical “Hamilton” has drawn widespread praise for its use of a diverse cast to explore American history. But a casting call seeking “nonwhite men and women” to audition for the show drew criticism from the union representing theater actors, prompting “Hamilton” to say Wednesday that it will amend its language to make clear that anyone is welcome to try out for the show.

I think this whole controversy is ridiculous, and being made into something WAY larger than it needs to be. Finally, a show is taking a stand against all white casting and projecting onto the stage a story about Americans played by all different types of Americans. I find nothing wrong with not casting white actors to play roles that are not written for white actors. No one would make a fuss if the casting call was for Dream Girls, A Raisin in the Sun, or The Color Purple. A mishap in wording or lapse in judgement when making a post should not warrant a legal team pursing this insignificant matter. To me the whole controversy and the many articles it produced was a waste of time and ink. Hamilton, like President Obama said, is so successful because it acknowledges and showcases everyone and all types of people. Besides being completely ridiculous, casting more white actors in these roles would diminish the meaning of the show. Seeing the evolution of our country, and different backgrounds on-stage holds an impact that an all white cast would not.
I'm glad that people are finally starting to bring attention to multi-cultural casts but I'm sad to see it being mocked and not celebrated. Shame on the legal team that attempted to make an issue.
