National Theatre commits to gender equality by 2021

Carousel, News | The Stage: National Theatre director Rufus Norris has committed to ensuring gender equality in terms of the directors and living writers the venue employs by 2021.

The measure is part of a diversity drive at the South Bank theatre, which has also announced that Lenny Henry – a high-profile diversity campaigner – has joined the venue’s board.

It is always encouraging to see theatres and organizations striving for gender and racial equality because, as I said in one of last week’s articles, the public eye is not the problem, it is the smaller building blocks that need to change before being able to change the larger picture. As in, you can’t have a gender and racially equal Tonys without gender and racial equality in the lesser theatres and corporations. My favorite part of this article is when Norris claims “There are a lot of women playwrights and women directors coming through, so it’s our responsibility to encourage that and reap the benefits.” Because so many articles and other people have claimed that women just aren’t available and are not submitting work in order to be considered and this just blows all of them out of the water. I am happy to see a place like The National to be working towards a decisive goal.
