I think that a competition like this is a great tradition, and the fact that it is in its 22nd year is a wonderful thing for the theatrical and educational community. I remember when I was in high school, our theatre class would send people every year to compete and not only did they learn Shakespeare while preparing, it was also a good experience for them. The competition is wonderful because it brings students who are interested in theatre from all over the Pittsburgh area together to celebrate their passion and showcase their work. The competition is also a great way to kid students interested in Shakespeare, in the performance realm. Something that I experienced in high school was that Shakespeare was being taught in English classes but not as much in theatre classes because it was considered too “difficult” but if students are never introduced at a young age, it will take longer to become comfortable with it.
