The difference between mixing your average singer and your above average singer is definitely noticeable. I’ve been working sound on a couple of occasions when there was a vocalist with an amazing voice, and you feel even more compelled to do all you can to get that voice to come through as true as possible to the audience. This article introduced me to several points I hadn’t considered before. I never really considered how seriously very experienced singles felt about using the same microphone when they perform, but I totally can see why they would want to. If this article makes anything clear, it’s that there is a ton to consider when working with singers on a level above the rest. It is interesting, but very important, to consider the differences between mixing for a singer’s monitors and from FoH. It’s also very true that only the more-experienced singers will have good mic technique. I’m not sure what’s worse: someone with no mic technique, or someone who thinks they have it, but aren’t quite there. I found the part of this article covering how you can balance the monitors with the mains so that onstage still sounds natural very interesting – there are clearly many, many adjustments to be considered when mixing vocals properly.
