57 Filmmaking Books You Need To Read

57 Filmmaking Books You Need To Read: In our quest for furthering our knowledge and understanding of all aspects of filmmaking and video production, we often turn to books as a source of information. Anyone who follows this site knows that I’m a big reader and a life-long learner. Whilst nothing trumps real-world experience and time in the trenches of getting things done, books can open up whole worlds of experience that we can gain knowledge and understanding from.

There is a wealth of good reads here, and this collection provides essential information about filmmaking. However, despite all the good information present within these books, as some of the books themselves point out, there are few teachers better than experience itself. I was also really glad to see books on screenwriting on this list as well. I think wether or not someone seeks to become a combination writer and filmmaker, one must have an intimate understanding of not only the physical aspects of film creation, but also of the conceptual and written aspects. Being able to craft a well constructed story to serve as the skeleton for the film to be produced will undoubtedly give the project more clarity, structure, and will likely yield a more successful product. I also appreciated this list's acceptance and support of independent filmmakers, a demographic frequently sneered at, and all too infrequently given the support they need to truly allow them and their work to flourish.
