All I have to say about this article is that I really just hope people check their carabiners and discard of the improperly locking ones. This article does a great job of detailing the problems with the carabiners and I definitely recommend using the visual aids and inspecting all carabiners purposefully. Carabiners are the product in the system that is designed to take the fall for you, the user, and when they are defective literally any number of terrible things can happen. Carabiners’ locking mechanisms are specifically designed to only open in times of relaxation and when the user is in control, there is no telling what a faulty locking gate will do in a moment of sudden fall or stress to the unit. As a rock climber, I am super protective of fall safety and other such gear, and to hear that a recall was done on all of these carabiners is very scary news.

Yikes! We have some of these here.

I’m going to go pull them and see if they’re affected.

This is a really scary thing, though. If it wasn’t for the greenpage, I wouldn’t know about this. I wonder how many affected units are still in service without the user knowing about the recall.

BUT, what is the failure mode anyway? I mean, if the gate doesn’t close, the unit loses a majority of it’s rated strength. But isn’t it the users responsibility to ensuring that the gate closes? It’s a tough question. The gate is supposed to close on it’s own, but the unit is supposed to be inspected before use.

This is a really unfortunate thing to happen to a relatively respected carabiner. company.
