So it's no surprise that seven alumni and two honorary degree recipients were nominated this year for Creative Arts Emmys, which were announced Sept. 12.

It is always so exciting to see Carnegie Mellon alumni recognized for their acheievements. Between the Tonys, Grammys, Emmys, and Oscars, CMU is generally represented at most every major award show. I love reading articles like this and knowing that these incredible people and I have something so fundamentally important in common.
I was so happy to see that CMU has expanded its horizons in this direction. My school’s affiliation with the Tony Awards was, of course, extremely exciting to my family and I. We actually sat and watched the whole show just so we could see and support my school. I know School of Drama sometimes makes efforts for its students to expand into other areas of arts, but I feel like there can never be enough diversity when it comes to education. The more diverse our education is, the better. The idea to broaden horizons in the professional world, the world after our training is done, is a really excellent idea for our school. My career goal is in the world of television, and even though I cherish my education in theatre, I am really enthusiastic about the other options and paths I can take. This way, my ideas are not limited to one medium, but I now have even more resources to produce and create.
I am extremely excited to watch the Emmys Sunday night. The freshmen DPs are actually planning on watching the awards show tomorrow night together on the projector.
I wasn't really "into" the celebrity culture and watching or even caring about awards shows until I applied to this school. Since then I have been constantly amazed by this school's impact on the entertainment world. Carnegie Mellon has a hand in almost every entertainment industry. Even though the awards don't always go the the CMU alumni, it is heartening to know that the people at the ceremony started where we are today. Any one of us could be there in a few years. Musical theater, Design and Production, Actors, Directors, and Dramaturgs all have the potential to succeed in any media they want to. I will be watching the show knowing that the people around me may be next. That fact is exhilarating and it's time like these that help remind us how honored we are to be studying here.
Oh my goodness, I cannot begin to explain how amazing it is that Carnegie Mellon, the school that i am currently attending, has produced so much talent... And not just any talent, but awarded talent. People leave CMU and go off to receive Emmys, Oscars, and Tonys. I love the fact that CMU Alums also are not limited to one form of art medium. It is insane to see them branch out into popular culture's most illustrious jobs in the arts. Hope to end up there on day.
I am so happy that we are talking about Carnegie Mellons connections in the television business, as publicly as we are the theater business. Last year when CMU was featured on the Tony's I was thrilled to watch all the wonderful professionals that had come out of the Drama program, but not all alumni go into theater and it's so important that those people are recognized equally. When I was applying to CMU I was talking to a friend of mine who works in New York as a performer. We were discussing all my different schools, and she said "if there is one thing I've noticed about Carnegie Mellon its that their alumnis really help each other out". I think it's really great, that someone with very little knowledge of CMU's program still saw the standard that is set for helping other grow in their professional lives. I am so excited to watch the Emmy's tonight, in 33 doing work with the rest of my Design and Production class, and see CMU grads to wonderful things.
I love being able to hear about such successful alumni! It is always great to be able to see the impacts CMU has on the entertainment industry. I also like that it is a wide impact, on many different areas of entertainment, from design to acting. One of my new favorite things to watch during the Tony’s is the CMU award, as well as the commercials about the school. The network of alumni for this program is amazing and is just one of the reasons I love being here so much. I am so excited to watch the Emmy’s with other people and see what happens.
Reading this article gave me chills. As read the names and accomplishments of the seven incredible artists profiled in this article, I realized something. These people are people who have walked the same halls I have, stressed out over the same projects, and been mentored by the same professors. I wonder if the college friends of these individuals ever realized that someday they'd be able to point to the screen during the Emmy's broadcast and say to whoever wants to listen "I know them! I went to school with her/him!" It's hard to imagine what things may come for my insanely creative and awesome classmates and upperclassmen friends in the program, but I know that I'll enjoy watching and being a part of whatever comes next for all of us!
This article amazed me, since I came to this school I think I finally understood the vastness and amazing experience I am getting by being here, but it is things like this that amaze me again. So many notable people have been in this program that I am now, whether is was many years ago, back in the College of Fine Arts building or just recently graduated. I'm glad this article spot lights the nominees that are alumni of this school, and even better that they mention the alumni working on the Grammy Awards. The quote mentioned that each alumni nominated contributed most of their success to the Carnegie alumni network does not surprise me, but still leaves me speechless that in four years, of very hard work, I will be apart of that, and that each of the faces I pass by in class are the next part of the network. Maybe one day I will know someone nominated as more than just a Carnegie alumni, but I will know there story from what I met them here at school.
Award shows such as the Emmy's remind us students of the far reaching effects of a single university, and the extensive alumni network which has helped designers go to the ends of the country and have the opportunity to go where their passions take them. It is obvious that CMU's West Coast Drama Alumni Clan (WCDAC) plays a major role in helping designers take the leap from east to west coast, and as a designer interested in the television and film industry, this is something I would like to explore during my time here at CMU and beyond. From watching these awards shows which often solely celebrate the stars of various shows, it is inspiring to see the value placed on the work that occurs behind the scenes, and the variety of categories from sound mixing to set design show that no detail goes unnoticed, giving those who work behind the limelight a chance to shine. Effects to acknowledge these artists not only celebrate all the ingenuity that goes into the production of a series but also gives the design community an opportunity to support and learn from other's work, as no performance occurs in a vacuum.
It is so amazing to know that I attend a school that has produced so many award recipients from the top award ceremonies in the world. It elates me to think that there is a possibility that that could be me in a few years. The fact that Carnegie Mellon Alum have received over 100 emmy awards is beyond me. It makes me so thankful to go to this great school.
This pushes current students to struve to reach their goals because if they see the girl two years abover them do it. then so can they.
