Tech Expo Needs Innovators, Problem Solvers, Creators of Cool Things

sightlines.usitt.org: The Tech Expo Committee is gearing up for the 2015 Tech Expo Catalog and Exhibit in Cincinnati and it hopes to have so many entries, it will hardly be able keep up. Anyone who has recently come up with a cool way to solve a production challenge; used an item or material in a safe, new, and creative manner; or developed a cool gadget or something within tech production that deserves to be shared, can share at the Tech Expo.

This sounds like a really cool convention to go to, I am always fascinated by when people re-invent the way materials are being used. Or coming up with entirely new materials for the art of production. The picture of the mask actually attracted me to this article. I am always incredibly impressed when I see sculptures or incredibly large masks that look to be seamless and smooth, as though it is a real face. Materials that can help an artist recreate natural features and textures should really be utilized and it is great for the theatre world that there are more and more people discovering different materials that will accomplish this. I would also love to go this conference and see the ‘problems’ that technicians and artists have found solutions for. One thing I love about this industry is how creative (and sometimes janky) our solutions for various problems are.

Creating something for the Tech Expo should be a requirement for every noteworthy drama school out there. Here at the School of Drama, our mission statement even specifically speaks to innovation of theatre, and changing the way we do things. We are supposed to be inventing new tools and processes with which we make theatre. We, and every other top school, should be entering something into this every year.

The entry form for the tech expo says that Projects generally fall into these broad catagories: design of a new device, creative use of a new (or old) material), or development of a particularly useful process, tool, or technique.

These are the projects we are (or should be) working on every day here. We should be putting a lot more thought into submitting things we discover or create.

By the sound of this article, they submissions, so we should absolutely be gearing up and thinking about what we can enter.
