Playwrights, Rewrites, Multiple Productions: Bakersfield Mist

HowlRound: 1. How did the different communities (creative team, location, audience) influence the development of Bakersfield Mist?
Each NNPN Rolling World Premiere taught me something valuable. Each creative team brought something new to the table. Each company of artists contributed meaningful insight and feedback that helped shape the script as I continued rewriting.

This article provides great insight into what the process for new plays is like as they travel and open in various theaters around the world. The playwright of "Bakersfield Mist" discusses the way that his play is transformed with each performance in a new location as the audiences and actors respond to the script differently in every setting. First, the way the actors approach the script influences its development. But what the playwright considers to be the "final arbiters" on the work is the audience. And after every opening, the playwright rewrites and the script changes again. I hadn't given much thought to a playwright being involved in the production once a script is "finished" but it seems like this journey with the play would be really valuable for a playwright to be involved in.
