Fall's Fab Female Showrunners
Women and Hollywood: "What a wonderful time for women on television!" said Julianna Margulies during her Emmy acceptance speech for The Good Wife last week. The remark, while not untrue, was somewhat undermined by the evening's lack of female nominees in gender-neutral categories, not to mention the tacky bit with Sofia Vergara rotating onstage like a sports car on a convention-center dais.

It's thought provoking to think about Julianna Margulies speech in contrast with Sofia Vergara's showcase moment and to see that same relationship in the shows we see on television. Often times people, including myself, don't realize the roles women play in shows. It's not as disconcerting to see women in a lead role now as it could have been when something like I Love Lucy came out and it's weird to think about how people might have reacted when it first aired. For example, watching the trailer for Transparent was more fascinating than watching the one for The Affair mostly because the content discussed in Transparent isn't in your everyday television show. Both show women in leading roles but Transparent just offers more complex woman than what we are used to seeing.
