Bosch GLM15 Laser Measure Review

Pro Tool Reviews: These days, technology has given us powerful tools in small packages. From layout to distance measuring, we’ve benefited greatly from technology in our jobsite laser tools. Sometimes though, to get to the amazing calculating features, I feel like I need a 40 hour week of training just on the tool. The new Bosch GLM15 Laser Measure is a breath of fresh air when it comes to the simple measuring jobs.

This looks like a really great product. Small, easy to use, and with a 50 dollar price point this seems like a pretty solid tool. What I like is the simplicity. You don't always need or want all of the bells and whistles that come with more expensive units if all you really need to do is simply measure the distance across a room. The top of the line Bosch laser measure even has bluetooth capability so you can send measurements to your phone. Seriously, who really needs that feature? But back to the GLM 15, I really like the one button design. Do you really want to have to spend an hour reading the instruction manual for a laser measurer before you can use it? The GLM 15 is incredibly easy to use. In terms of other features, you can hold up to two measurements and that's it. It measures from the back of the device which is important to know but also makes sense as the only setting.

I don't see laser measurers ever replacing the tape measure in a shop. It just doesn't make sense to use in a shop setting. Unless you have a second person and are using it "surveyor" style, as the author says, it's not much use in the shop. That being said, it still seems like a worthwhile investment at only 50 bucks.

I started using one of these "simpler" laser tapes last summer at Tait and I must say its a fantastic tool to use. No i do not think it will replace tape measures for carpenters but for riggers especially 90' in the air having this small compact tool to use is fantastic. Incredibly accurate and easy to get a handle on, The biggest difference that I found interesting as to how much I actually liked to use it was the shear size difference between these "simple" laser tapes versus the more common laser tapes that are large, heavy, bulky; they have lots of amazing functionality but the size is incredibly cumbersome. How ever when it comes to choosing between having a heavy 35' tape measure on my pants belt or one of these lasers in my pocket, hands down Im reaching for a laser 9 times out of ten.

This looks like a great little tool to add to my gig bag. As of now I find myself trying to make room for my larger size laser measure in my already cramped gig bag. The biggest appeal of the size of this is that it looks like it can comfortably fit in a pocket at a gig without being too bulky. For me the uses of these laser measurement tools are endless. The primary two uses I have found myself using this type of tool for are as follows. 1) Laser measuring tools make hanging line arrays at the right height easy and seamless. 2) Setting delays can be risky business if you don't have an accurate means of finding distances. A conventional tape measure can be tough to deal with, especially in venues with fully set up houses already. Laser measuring allows simple point and shoot measurement taking from anywhere in the house quickly and easily.
