7 suing magician David Copperfield in overtime dispute

Las Vegas Review-Journal: Seven men allege they worked more than 40 hours a week as stagehands for David Copperfield’s magic show at the MGM Grand without receiving overtime compensation.
The men filed a federal lawsuit on Feb. 15 that accuses Copperfield, as well as four companies he controls, of violating the Fair Labor Standards Act and Nevada law.

There is something funny in my mind about a magician being taken to court. It is ridiculous that not paying your employees what they are due is still and issue that has to be dealt with in court somewhat regularly. It won't be very surprising, for me at least, if it turns out he did keep their overtime pay. And now that he has been called on it he is going to change things up and start paying them appropriately.

It sucks that Copperfield has been abusing his workers and not paying them sufficient overtime. It seems that this sort of thing happens all too often in this industry because of the hours that it entails. I find the secrecy part of the lawsuit to be really interesting though, and the fact that there's battling lawsuits, and the fact that the lawsuits may be a coverup of sorts, is funny. I wonder which side will win out in the end?

This is a rough issue to deal with. I understand the struggle that in in place with such an intense secrecy agreement, but at the same time copperfield needs to treat the employees correctly. I wonder how much he actually has to do with all of this also. I would assume that he is only the figurehead for the organization and the people who are not paying the employees are those managers who are representing him. I also agree with thomas that i seem to be hearing about this more and more recently about workers in the entertainment industry getting taken advantage of when it comes to working long hours.
