Stage Directions: WorldStage provided video support for Lucky Guy on Broadway, Nora Ephron’s play about tabloid journalism starring Tom Hanks, which is nominated for six Tony Awards, including scenic and lighting design. Video projection was key in establishing place and time for the show. Robin Silverstri, a creative director/partner at Batwin + Robin designed the show, creating a palette of “film noir-style fragments, shadows and elements rather than literal video clips.” The video system consisted of multiple projection screens, each of which was atypically sized and oriented, LED video panels, and a forced perspective ceiling panel above the set, which offered additional display surfaces. Video was served from a centralized Dataton WATCHOUT media server system. How they got it all to work is pretty fascinating—check out the full details below.
