Quantum Theatre's Norwegian 'Dream of Autumn' shifts time, culture

TribLIVE: Ask an American theater fan to name a Norwegian playwright, and the answer will almost certainly be Henrik Ibsen. In Europe and much of the rest of the world, the answer would be Jon Fosse. Since 1996, the contemporary Norwegian playwright has written more than 26 plays, and his works have been translated into 40 languages. The French newspaper Le Monde referred to Fosse as “the Beckett of the 21st century.”

I am very excited to see this show next week. Perhaps the most intriguing thing about it to me, as this article discusses, is the generic character titles of Mother, Father, etc. They force you to place some stereotypes on the characters to begin with, merging our experiences with the world of the play. I imagine that phenomenon will allow for deeper connection with the emotions of the characters instead of being removed from them by a name where you must first relate to that specific person rather than to their intention.
