Kennedy Center to Produce New Ahrens/Flaherty Musical

Variety: The Kennedy Center will produce the world premiere of new tuner “Little Dancer,” with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and score by Stephen Flaherty. Susan Stroman (“The Scottsboro Boys,” “The Producers,” incoming Broadway musical “Big Fish”) will direct and choreograph the production, slated for the center’s Eisenhower Theater in October 2014. Musical is a fact-fiction hybrid about the 14-year-old ballerina who posed for a sculpture by 19th century French artist Edgar Degas. The statue is part of the permanent collection at D.C.’s National Gallery of Art.

The Kennedy Center is a very interesting organization. They are one of the few in the country that is both a major presenting as well as producing house. And they are top of the line in both fields. This new Ahrens/Flaherty musical will surely be interesting, and I look forward to seeing it. I think the upcoming production of Side Show will be fascinating as well, and will hopefully go on to do as well as some other Kennedy Center shows like Ragtime, which brings the good name of DC theater to a wider audience.
