Alan Cumming Macbeth, Set Within a Psych Ward, Opens On Broadway April 21
Playbill.com: After acclaimed engagements in Scotland and at the Lincoln Center Festival last summer, Tony Award winner Alan Cumming opens his one-man Macbeth on Broadway April 21 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
Set in a psychiatric unit, Cumming plays a patient who is reliving the story of Macbeth – bringing to life over 15 characters in Shakespeare's bloody work, which is performed without an intermission. It has a running time of one hour and 45 minutes. Previews began April 7. It is scheduled to play a limited run through June 30.

I read "Macbeth" for the first time my senior year of high school in English class, but never saw it performed. CMU's production of Macbett this year fascinated me; Ionesco is one of my favorite playwrights, and it was a brilliant production by all aspects. I remember afterwards thinking a lot about the value of twisting the meaning and environment of a story. I think this definitely applies to this production: if the story of Macbeth is simply born from the imagination of a mad man, the story is still the same but the message is conveyed in a radically different manner from that of a traditional production. I'd like to see this show, and compare the experience to the one I got from seeing Macbett.
I find this to be a fascinating and clever idea! I think that this production has the ability to be so interesting for the fact that a one man in a psych ward is playing all characters. Talk about psychotic. Plus having just one man play all of the characters will really interesting in seeing how he individualizes each character if he even does so. I hope I can possibly go out and get a chance to see this.
Ive also, like camille, never seen macbeth performed but i have read it and i think its a wonderful play. I absolutly love the idea of it being in a psych ward. i htink its a new approach and adds a huge layer of depth to the show ,as if there weren't enough already, but it adds a total new look on the story and really makes you think deeper into the meaning. the design for this show can only be impecabble im sure and the actor playing the lead is absolutly stunning i love him as an actor and think hes a reat choice for this part.
OH MY GOODNESS I WANT TO SEE THIS! First of all Alan Cumming is super talented and I think that this interpretation of the play is extremely creative. He is talented in that he has a great ability to captivate audiences and his character acting is very weird in an interesting way. He is amusing to observe and I am sure that he is able to portray the 15 different characters convincingly. I also really enjoy one/two man shows because it really forces the audience to be creative, which I find to be fun.
I would love to see this show. Both because Alan Cummings is cool and the idea of it being set in a psych ward sounds awesome. Id be interested to see what the shows design is and how they incorporate all of the old witchy castle type stuff in to a modern day psych ward. Also id like to know if they changed the script at all or left it classical. Either way Ill be looking out for this production and hopefully learn more about it.
