Colm Toibin on the Genesis of His ‘Testament of Mary’
NYTimes.com: Every night from as early as I can remember the family knelt in the evening and said the rosary. Each mystery, as they were called, had 10 Hail Marys; the first part of each Hail Mary was recited by a single voice, and then the second part — “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen” — by the rest of the family in unison. At the end my mother would recite some extra prayers, including the “Memorare,” which began, “Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who sought thy aid or implored thy intercession was left unaided.”

I think this is fantastic and I have no Idea why people are not commenting on this. Earlier I read an article about how controversial this play was becoming however it had never mentioned that the author was catholic and spent so much time studying and researching what he was writing. Even as I read the article the whole thing had a narrative that was just beautiful. everything he talked about was so personal and he was willing to stand up for what he believed it. This play was truly a labor of love and he plans to show the virgin Mary and a moral human but still a great women is fantastic I think that based off his commentary of the play he is doing everything right and that this play is simple controversial because the director, actress and writer are gay. I wish I can go this it seems beautiful.
