Professional and Student Designers Honored at the Michael Merritt Awards and Design Exposition

Stage Directions: Costume designer Jess Goldstein will be honored with the 20th Annual Merritt Award for Excellence in Design and Collaboration at a ceremony Monday April 15 at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier. The scenic designer Walt Spangler, a collaborator, close friend and former student, will present him the award. The award will be a part of the Michael Merritt Awards and Design Exposition, where several more prizes will be awarded, including some for emerging professional and student designers who exhibit at the event. The Michael Philippi Prize for Best Exhibit: Professional Designer and the Prize for Student Designer are both worth $500, and designers and students can apply to have their designs shown. Some winners of other prizes at the event have also been announced. Sarah Hughey, a Chicago-area lighting designer, will receive the Michael Maggio Emerging Designer Award, a $2,000 honorarium is given annually to an emerging scenic, costume, lighting, sound, or other media designer in acknowledgment of excellence in artistry and collaboration. The winners of academic prizes, worth $2,000 each, include: Delia Ridenour, a graduating senior from Columbia College Chicago, with a major in Costume Design and minor in Small Business Management has won the The John Murbach Columbia College Chicago Prize; Jack Hawkings, a sound designer completing this third year at The Theatre School at DePaul University has won the The Theatre School at Depaul University Prize; Sharon Limpert, a senior at Loyola University Chicago who intends to pursue a career in costuming has won the The Loyola University Chicago Prize; and costume designer Stephanie Cluggish, in her third year of the MFA program at Northwestern University, has won the The Northwestern University Prize.
