Excitement, Achievement, Awards: CMU Remakes Opening Night
sightlines.usitt.org: Opening Night of the Milwaukee 2013 Annual Conference & Stage Expo was more theatrical than ever – thanks to Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama staff and students who created a multimedia show.
USITT Fellows wanted to spice up the Conference kickoff at Milwaukee's Delta Center by making the Opening Night awards more about showing than telling and adding excitement to the usual speech, awards, and reception. Cindy Limauro, Fellow and professor of lighting design at CMU, approached colleagues with the challenge, and they accepted.

Working on this event was a lot of fun. It was an interesting challenge prepping the event from off site when we weren't sure about a lot of the details. It was a waiting game to prep everything, wait for notes from the client, whom none of the students had worked with before, incorporate those notes, and then have to make changes once we were on site. It was a unique experience for students to have, and it was a great learning experience. A big congratulations to everyone involved.
I had no idea that CMU was so involved in USITT. It's really quite amazing. I wish i could have seen it. I know people always have there hand's full with with school work and shows but to do the opening ceremonies for USITT on top of all of that is a little insane ( in a good way of course). All I can say is that I'm proud of the people who worked on this event. I know how stressful our lives can be and to take on an even like that and pull it off is simply astounding. Congratulation all around.
This is such a cool thing to read about! I wish i had been there to see what the expierience was like or i at least wish there were more pictures. I am always so proud to go to carnegie mellon when i read things like this. USITT is a HUGE deal and the fact that CMU had such a huge part in the opening cerimonies is great! Im sure it was super stressful having to work on that plus the numerous amout of shows we have to put on, not to mention that their work would be judged by most of USITT. Talk about nerve racking! Congratulations!!! and Well done!
