Teresa’s Weekly Update: Just the Facts Edition

TCG Circle: In our current political maelstrom, everyone seems to have their own set of facts, twisted and spun to support the confirmation biases of their opinions. This can sometimes be true of our own theatre movement, where differing methodologies have us comparing apples to horses. This is what makes Theatre Facts such an invaluable asset to the field, and over the next few months, we’ll do some myth-busting and share some surprising findings here.

I'm glad to see the increase in audience attendance in the past year. While the increase was small, it still indicates progress in the right direction. I wonder what this increase is a result of: Is it that people are not hurting as bad financially than they were in the past couple of years? Or is it that theaters are doing a better job with advertising? Or are people slightly more aware of the arts now? I can imagine that it might be a combination of these and other factors. On the topic of only one of of the most frequently produced playwrights this year being female, I wonder if CTG isn't blowing it out of proportion. I doubt that theaters are blatantly not producing plays written by females or anything like that; the popular plays right now just happen to be written by men. This fact may reflect a trend in the types of people who are playwrights- proportionally, it might make sense that only one of these top 11 is a female. Either way, it seems like TCG is putting in a lot of effort to provide educational and insightful programming to the larger theatre community, which is great- we all need to remember to look out for each other.
