Sondheim tops U.K. nominations
Variety: Highly lauded Sondheim revivals dominate the nominations of the 2012 Theater Awards U.K., with five of the six noms for musical production and musical performance divided among helmer Jonathan Kent's Chichester Festival Theater revival of "Sweeney Todd" and Jonathan Munby's Sheffield Crucible revival of "Company."

I would love to see "Sweeney Todd" in the setting that the story takes place, that would be really awesome. As for the popularity of Sondheim right now, I'm not really sure how to explain that phenomenon. There are spells where one genre, show, writer seems to be popular and everyone goes with it. The same can be said about movies. At some point there were just so many super hero movies, then bachelor/ bachelorette movies, and we threw in some Nazi movies at one point. I guess that people are in a dark singing mood right now. If the audience is up for seeing a show where humans are baked into food, Sweeney will live on.
Right on Sondheim. There is a reason that he is so popular. It's because his work is fantastic. Even if the production level is not very high, when going to a Sondheim show you can at least know you'll here some spectacular music. Its true, perhaps we are in a dark age of theatre where demon barbers and adulterous princes fetch are interests. There are those out there who are sick of Sondheim and say its over rated. I for one am not one of those people. I can listen to one of his shows on repeat and discover new things with every listen. Well deserved Sondheim.
