‘Snow White’ gets a new musical
TribLIVE: There’s a buzz of excitement this week in the Greensburg rehearsal studio at Stage Right, where a local cast is preparing for the premiere of a full-length musical a year in the making.
Anthony Marino, Stage Right’s artistic director, has big plans for “Snow White the Musical” that don’t end at the Palace Theatre. He’s hoping to take this production all the way to New York City — or at least to have it published so other groups can perform the show.

I must express my personal excitement about this musical, due to the fact that my employment at Disney World brings me close to the role of Snow White. It is no question that many Disney stories turned musical have been successful on Broadway. Seeing as the creators of this show hope to take the show that far, I will be looking to see if this story has just as much success. It could turn out to be another money-maker, but my hope is that is also gives tribute to the loved fairytale. The idea of seeing further into the life of this character excites me and I think it will give a fresh look on this old classic.
I am curious to see how this production would turn out. If the artistic goal is to bring to life a new vision of the tale by the brothers Grimm, they why are they using a costume of Snow White that is directly suggestive of the Disney vision? Especially in publicity photos! They aren't using Disney music. It also seems inconsistent with the 'darker' place they imply that they are looking to take their interpretation.
Of course a musical of Snow White is the next step in the Snow White phenomenon of this past year. With two Snow White films released in movie theaters this year its natural that someone would be inspired to take it further.
I'm skeptical about this. Then again, every new musical that is being talked about has some skepticism around it. Jody also raises a wonderful point, if this production is trying to separate itself from the rest, they should have considered that the American audience will instantly associate Snow White's costume with the happy Disney version they know from 20 years ago.
I hope they succeed! If they are to do so they've got to tighten up their ship (or so it seems from the article), but I'll be interested to see.
Snow White, Unfortunately, is the only Disney movie I have ever seen that I can truly say I dislike. The voice of Snow White is so obnoxious and she is so overly innocent that I just can't watch it. The Brothers Grimm tale about Snow White is very different from the movie, and I'm grateful that it is being made into a musical that is slightly more true to the original story. As Sam mentioned, there has been a sudden barrage of Snow White in the entertainment industry in the past year, all of which have had completely different takes on the princess and her adventures. It will be interesting to see how this play adaptation interprets the princess and her story.
It is very exciting to see that another Disney movie is turning into a play. Like how Lion King Musical has been so popular, I am hoping to see the same situation for this play. Also, I am really curious how the story will be structured so that it will not be boring to those Snow white fans who might have seen the movie several times already. I hope this play definitely attract people who love fairy tales. Also, I want to see how many effort the company has put into this production on costumes, scenes, and acting so that it will have all of loving, charming characteristics of Snow White that can be well delivered to the audiences.
I am extremely excited for this production. I have always been in love with the story of Snow White and I'm curious to see what new and interesting aspect they bring to it. With the release of Walt Disney's animated movied "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" in 1938, the idea of a musical Snow White is not a new concept. However, there was one statement that caught my attention and that was the idea of a combination of Walt Disney's Snow White and that of the Grimm Brothers. I always felt that the Disney version of Snow White was very fairy tale and perfect. And I felt the Grimm version was far to dark for some children. I would love to see the hybrid of the two come together. I would love to hav a chance to see this production in the coming year and I hope that it becomes quite successful.
I am excited for the possible transformation of another Disney film into a musical. like Elaine said, While this isn't hard hitting theatre bringing major issues to light it could be used as a means to get children involved seeing theatre at an earlier age. I think also it is interesting in regards to the costuming choices. The article expressed a desire to make Snow White seem approachable with the Disney like appearance. I can't help but wonder if this is some type of violation of copyright regarding character design after reading the article on copyright.
This is not surprising. Snow White movies, series, cartoons have plagued us for the past two years!! This is the natural next step. I am excited about this, and I hope that it is as good as they seem to think it is and if it is, that it gets the backing that it deserves. We need to stop producing the same plays and musicals over and over again and brach out and give new shows an opportunity. That is one of the only ways to get new potential audiences interested in leaving their houses and going to the theatre.
I think the only Disney story that I wouldn't want to see as a musical is Pocahontas.....
Those rehearsal costumes are a little scary though.... or at least I hope that they are rehearsal costumes.. Nevertheless... GOOD LUCK!
I am excited for this production of snow white but I am definitely still skeptical. Most disney musicals are a success because they are crowd pleasers. The Lion King and Beauty And The Beast did well because they were true to the disney versions and told the same story that everyone knew in happy, visually stunning ways. If we take a second to remember Tarzan, that show flopped. The movie was fantastic but putting it on stage made it seem darker some how, it wasn't done properly and people had no interest. I hope that changing the story to keep it closer to the original doesn't discourage the audience. I think that snow white should be an incredible musical and hopefully it will be.
Sorry Jacquelyn! I'm not excited about this musical at all. The pictures in the article show the costumes as the Disney Snow White characters, but the article later says that Noble portrays Snow White as a combination between the Disney version and the Grimm fairytale version. If Noble is dressed in the Disney costume of Snow White, it will be very hard for me to imagine the character in the Grimm Fairytale context. Besides, many already know how Snow White acts, and Disney is already packed full with musicals. I think it would be interesting to see a completely darker character of Snow White. Maybe they could change it and have Snow White be a villain? I wish they would change up the story and give a different perspective to the play. I personally would like to see if the Dwarfs saw Snow White as innocent or devilish. How did Snow White really act? I find plays with characters who have imperfections more interesting.
