'Rhinocéros' review: Magnetic tale of beasts

SFGate: Some parts of Eugène Ionesco's absurdist classic "Rhinocéros" seem tired or tiresome, but on the whole, the Cal Performances offering that opened Thursday is a gift. The Berkeley run is one of the very few stops on Théâtre de la Ville's, Paris' resident company, first American tour. Director Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota's inventive staging strikes a resonantly personal and thrilling note. And his actors, even as seen in the inhospitably spacious Zellerbach Hall, are terrific.

"Rhinocéros" is a play I've loved since the first time I read it, but that I've never gotten to see performed. I worked on a community theater production of it that never got past the very early stages of the rehearsal and design process, and it's interesting to read in this article what this major theater did with it. I'm also always really interested in learning about the french performing arts scene, since it's my home country but most of my technical theater experience has been in the US.
