Mark Hotton, ‘Rebecca’ Financier, Is Arrested

NYTimes.com: A Long Island stockbroker defrauded the producers of the Broadway musical “Rebecca” with an elaborate scheme that included a fictitious loan and phantom investors who were conjured up as part of a sham plan to rescue the financially ailing show, federal authorities charged in a criminal complaint Monday.

I am really glad to see that the man behind all of this madness was finally arrested. It is sad to see that this man would have gone through all of this trouble to make this happen... I don't understand why anyone would do this to a show. This cost so many people their jobs. This also crushed so many fans hearts, I'm sure. I, for one, was very excited to see this production! I am glad that they have found the person behind this madness, but it is still very upsetting to know that someone would do this.

This to me is something out of a TV sitcom, not something you expect to read on a established journalistic webpage. Maybe it is because I am financially/business-ey unaware, but I am actually inpressed with someone who could get that far into a scheme like that and have no one notice. You would think a gala or a banquet would be held for investors in which the show pitch could be brought before them and they would get to see each other face to face. It is scary to imagine one person is able to create a myriad of fake people and money in today's world. Who knows, this could be the big hit? This is craaaaaaazy. Someone was obviously inspired by fictional characters who got away with their scheme in a little musical called The Producers. Thats totally a thing to stake 20 years in jail on.

Anywhoo, Im satisfied that this person was shut down. Its pretty awful though, that it had to happen at the cost of Rebecca being shut down. Hopefully, the show can still pull through at a later date, and not because of illegal funding. Three cheers for Rebecca! My favorite part of this whole ordeal is the faking of someone's death. This man must have been seriously committed.
