Job
Opening: Technical
Director
Reports
To: Production Manager
The 5th
Avenue Theatre seeks a Technical Director to lead day-to-day production
activities at our vibrant and ever-growing organization.
The
primary duties of the Technical Director are: to support the Production Manager
with execution of day-to-day tasks directly related to our physical productions
to provide the highest level of production value, fiscal responsibility, and
safety; to act as liaison between The 5th Avenue Theatre Artistic and
Production leadership and offsite scenic studios to ensure adherence to budget,
load-in and future storage and rental viability, and design choices; to
incorporate and maintain lighting and sound plots and manage their overall
effect on the hang chart for each production.
The
5th Avenue theatre presents both self-produced shows and tours. The Technical
Director communicates with touring Head Carpenter/Production Supervisor on
details relevant to our particular theatre, which can include advance site
visits and recommendations on modifications to the touring set, including
building fill deck on- or off-site and providing full and accurate assessment
of our resources.
In
addition (though no means limited to the following), the Technical Director:
Assists
Production Manager in managing materials and labor budgets. Works closely with
Head Carpenter and all other Production Department Heads to ensure smooth and
efficient load-ins, load-outs, changeovers and strips. In collaboration with
above staff and other Production administrative staff, ensures viability and
success of in-house events (Spotlight Nights, education programs, Gala) and
4-wall rentals.
Oversees
organization of our warehouse spaces and ensures spaces are maintained in ways
that best support use of stock items, sending and receiving sets and props for
rentals, and work that needs to be performed onsite.
Complies
with the policies and procedures of The 5th Avenue Theatre, including
non-discrimination regulation, personnel rules and collective bargaining
agreements. Participates as needed in labor/management meetings and labor
negotiations.
Work
at The 5th Avenue Theatre includes interactions with visiting designers,
directors and road crews; therefore interpersonal, diplomatic and communication
skills are a must, along with problem solving within typical non-deferrable
theatrical deadlines. Also required are
a demonstrated ability to work as a team or independently, as needed, and a
good sense of humor.
This
position will be a full-time, salaried position requiring flexible and at times
long hours. Salary commensurate with experience and accompanied by competitive
benefits package.
Deadline: Monday, September 29, 2012. Start date negotiable; as soon as is feasible.
