Job Opening:                        Technical Director  

Reports To:                Production Manager

The 5th Avenue Theatre seeks a Technical Director to lead day-to-day production activities at our vibrant and ever-growing organization.




The primary duties of the Technical Director are: to support the Production Manager with execution of day-to-day tasks directly related to our physical productions to provide the highest level of production value, fiscal responsibility, and safety; to act as liaison between The 5th Avenue Theatre Artistic and Production leadership and offsite scenic studios to ensure adherence to budget, load-in and future storage and rental viability, and design choices; to incorporate and maintain lighting and sound plots and manage their overall effect on the hang chart for each production.

The 5th Avenue theatre presents both self-produced shows and tours. The Technical Director communicates with touring Head Carpenter/Production Supervisor on details relevant to our particular theatre, which can include advance site visits and recommendations on modifications to the touring set, including building fill deck on- or off-site and providing full and accurate assessment of our resources.

In addition (though no means limited to the following), the Technical Director:

Assists Production Manager in managing materials and labor budgets. Works closely with Head Carpenter and all other Production Department Heads to ensure smooth and efficient load-ins, load-outs, changeovers and strips. In collaboration with above staff and other Production administrative staff, ensures viability and success of in-house events (Spotlight Nights, education programs, Gala) and 4-wall rentals.

Oversees organization of our warehouse spaces and ensures spaces are maintained in ways that best support use of stock items, sending and receiving sets and props for rentals, and work that needs to be performed onsite.

Complies with the policies and procedures of The 5th Avenue Theatre, including non-discrimination regulation, personnel rules and collective bargaining agreements. Participates as needed in labor/management meetings and labor negotiations.

Work at The 5th Avenue Theatre includes interactions with visiting designers, directors and road crews; therefore interpersonal, diplomatic and communication skills are a must, along with problem solving within typical non-deferrable theatrical deadlines.  Also required are a demonstrated ability to work as a team or independently, as needed, and a good sense of humor.

This position will be a full-time, salaried position requiring flexible and at times long hours. Salary commensurate with experience and accompanied by competitive benefits package.
